AZUR SPACE Solar Power GmbH orders a microPRO XS for processing of III-V (GaAs) solar cells from 3D-Micromac

The high flexible microPRO XS laser system is ideally suited for structuring, cutting and drilling of solar cells.

3D-Micromac AG, the industry leader in laser micromachining and roll-to-roll laser systems for the photovoltaic, medical device and electronics markets, today announced the order intake for a microPRO XS laser system for processing of III–V (GaAs) solar cells from AZUR SPACE Solar Power GmbH based in Heilbronn.

AZUR SPACE is developing and producing III–V (GaAs) solar cells that are used for supplying satellites with energy and that are utilized in terrestrial concentrative solar systems. Until today more than 550 satellites have been equipped with AZUR SPACE cells. In order to increase the production of such solar cells AZUR SPACE has now ordered a microPRO XS from 3D-Micromac. Main application for this system is laser drilling and laser cutting of germanium, semiconductor and glass substrates. In addition, the flexible system will be used for laser marking.

Engineer is checking solar cell

„During the assessment of different laser systems for our solar cell production 3D-Micromac’s microPRO XS has convinced us with its smart machine concept in combination with the achievable throughput rates” states Jürgen Heizmann, CEO of AZUR SPACE. “We are looking forward to installing this system on our production site.”

3D-Micromac’s microPRO XS is an adaptable laser micromachining system that is mainly used in industrial manufacturing settings. Due to its high flexibility it is ideally suited for all applications of laser structuring, laser cutting, laser drilling and laser welding. Depending on the chosen process module and the installed laser source, a variety of materials can be processed.

About Azur Space

AZUR SPACE has been the leading supplier of solar cells for space PV for years.  In 1964 the first cells for space photovoltaic were produced in Heilbronn. In 1969 the first German solar-powered satellite “AZUR” was launched into orbit – equipped with solar cells made by AZUR SPACE that was operating then under the name Telefunken GmbH.
